Symbol for Windows Gold feature list

Below you will find an oversight of the new features of the Gold version. These are the features that have been ADDED to the programs, all the classic features remain part of the programs. The Gold version costs exactly the same as the Classic version. For owners of Symbol for Windows Classic, there are discounts, depending on the purchasing date of your copy of Symbol for Windows. Contact your distributor for more information.

Free positioning of symbols and pictures

The first thing that stands out, is the possibility to arrange the symbols in the chart without the use of a grid. Pictures and symbols can be placed freely on the page, even on top of each other. For the Paper Chart Maker, this means you can create pictures that tell a story, or search images. It is an even larger change in the Personal Communicator. With this program, you can create complete interactive screens, where each picture is clickable and connects you to another page, is pronounced by the speech synthesizer, or activates a command. The Personal Communicator always was an extensive and flexible communication program. Now the possibility has been added to arrange the symbols on a screen in such a way, that the composition itself helps the symbol user to grasp the meaning of concepts and the world around him/her. For example, think about creating a landscape, where the words that describe your own house are accessible by clicking on the house in the landscape and words about the hospital can be accessed by clicking on the hospital building down the street. On top of that, the free layout feature turns the Personal Communicator into an interactive story-based gamebuilder and -player. By attaching speech, music or commands to pictures and/or pages, extensive games can be created and played, with all the special input options like scanning available to the user. Read more about the free layout function in Symbol for Windows.

New member of the Symbol for Windows program family: Symbol E-mail

At the request of many of our clients, we have added a new program to the Symbol for Windows series: a program to send and receive e-mails with symbols. The e-mails can be read by friends and family who don't have special software to read them. This possibility existed in the Document Maker, but that program is designed to be a full-fledged word processor (symbol processor) with a lot of extra possibilities. For those symbol users who don't need all the extra's and individual adaptation possibilities, Symbol E-mail is a good alternative. The number of options is limited and accessible through a couple of preselectable settings. Extra's like flexlex are not included. The program can be used with scanning.

Exchange your files easily: saving pictures with the file

The use of picture files in Symbol for Windows used to be bound to one important rule: if you wanted to move the file or send it to someone else, you had to send the picture files along and save them in the exact same folder they were in when they were added to the Symbol for Windows file. In the Gold version, this isn't necessary anymore. The pictures are saved with the file automatically. The extension of these new files is different from the old one. Previously, Paper Chart Maker files were saved with extension .pcm, now this is .pcmx (with the x of extra). The same goes for Personal Communicator files (.pc and .pcx respectively) and Document Maker files (.dm and .dmx). It remains possible to choose the old format in the save dialogue. This possibility will come in handy if you want to save memory space on your computer.

Exchange, move and back-up private databases

The different editors that are available with Symbol for Windows (the Bliss Editor, the Sign Editor and the Image Manager), compose personal databases of symbols. Moving such a database used to be complicated and prone to errors, because as many as four files had to be moved. With the Gold version this problem no longer exists. Through the function "exchange databases" in each of these programs, you can easily save the database at a different location: for a different user, to rearrange your files on the computer or network, or for making a back-up.

Using PNG files

It was already possible to use the most common picture formats with Symbol for Windows. A recent development is the use of .png files, especially on the Internet. These files can now be used with Symbol for Windows, too. They can be opened, saved in files and databases and exported in different picture formats.

Sclera and Arasaac symbol libraries

With the Gold version, two new free of charge databases are available: Sclera is a symbol library that is created by a group of Belgian enthusiasts and currently consists of approximately 4000 symbols and over 2000 concepts. The Sclera database is delivered as a private database and is not maintained by either Handicom or the creators of Sclera. This means that you can download new symbols from the Sclera website, but have to put them into the private database yourself, with the help of the Image Manager. If you do not wish to use the Image Manager, the new symbols will have to be saved on the computer as image files. The second database is Arasaac. The Arasaac symbols have been created by Sergio Palao. They are the property of CATEDU ( under Creative Common's License. (Terms of use) You can also download the symbols in the form of zipped .png files (Portable Network Graphics) from Catedu's website As a service to our users, the Arasaac database will be maintained and updated for use with our software, free of charge. Moreover, the Arasaac symbols can be made transparent, so you can create great-looking communication charts with free layout, using a background picture!
